So Good They Posted Twice

Well I just read this in the paper version and thought I'd post it, but I see that Slugger has beaten me to the punch not once but twice : the Irish Times is going subscription-free (er, subs required) from Monday coming. My sentiments lie somewhere between horray, about bloody time, and here comes another excuse for procrastination...

The new website for the paper will be www.irishtimes.com.

Independent of Reality

Well done to Conor McCabe, who reveals that the Indo's scoop this morning, alleging that a Eurobarometer poll pins the Lisbon result on anti-immigration sentiment and a naive impression that the treaty can be rewritten, was no such thing. It was either a very early (and worrying) leak or a work of fiction. Fiction in the Independent? Go figure.

Foley Field Recordings

I'm not generally one to rush out an buy an album because I looked at a website, but for Amor Tobin's Foley Room I think I might make an exception. Incredible site and the found music samples (when you find them) are like nothing I've heard before.

Speaking of great music, we had a marvellous time at the Esbjörn Svensson Trio's concert in Vicar Street on Friday night. Great atmosphere and incredible music. See them if you can!

The Banned Trocaire Ad

It's sad but not all that odd that the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has chosen to ban an advert associated with this year's Lenten campaign from Trocaire. read the rest of this post »

Horseshit of History

Today is an historical day. Two sworn enemies put themselves up for election so that they can go into government together. It's as if Lord Sauron and Donkey were to become joint managers of the Republic of Ireland football team. It's, like, that historical.

Twaddle of course.

But not as bad as concocting a witless analogy with Israel and Palestine to help "convey the scale of the transformation now underway in Northern Ireland."

Slumping, Tumbling

I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but I'm finding it hard to tally the BBC's World Stock Market Slump Hits Second Day with the BBC's own stock market data, especially if you take this snapshot of the One-Month View (this is a snapshot at the time of writing. The current state of play is here). It's quite a fall, but I wouldn't call it a slump. Compare it, for example, to 1987 or 2001.

At least the FT has updated its story between last night and this afternoon.

Press Photo of the Year

Via Apparently Nothing At All, I see that the results of the World Press Photo of the Year awards are out. The Winners' gallery is spectacular, including this picture on the right, taken after December's pipeline explosion in Lagos. Well worth a look.
