Bliing-Ray

There's an interesting snippet in today's FT suggesting that Sony, manufacturer of the Blu-Ray disk, is winning the battle against the MS/Toshiba HD format. Personally I don't care too much (though some are antipathetic either way), being the sort of ignoramous who could probably not tell the difference but who knows enough to make do with an ancient DVD player until one format or other is obsolete. Let the impatient early-adopters take the risks...

Strangely, though, there seems to be a slight consensus that the best disk-we-don't-need will win this time (unlike the VHS/Betamax saga). Oh joy.

Whatev-ah

Great piece on BBC today on the development of the term WHATEV-AH. It contains a history of the term and the fact that it can be used in so many ways; "I don't care", "I want to end this conversation, "I am totally depressed"....or absolutely nothing at all.

One doesn't hear the term so much in middle-class Dublin areas despite the popularity of Little Britain here. The real sociolinguistic odditiy of recent times is how teenagers have moved from trying to speak like they live in Southern England to speaking like they live in Southern California in less than one generation.

Whatev-ah the reason, it has taken more than Matt Lucas to achieve.

From Londis

You know the way it is: skimming the new South African companies bill (as you do) late in the office and you just check out a few blogs, including the excellent Disillusioned Lefty, only to be distracted by the fact that he's found whole episodes of Black Books. Which I can say without an ounce of hyperbole is the best piece of television ever ever. And here, for your viewing pleasure, are the best ever ever episodes of this positively world-historical series. Watch out for the analysis of old versus expensive wine...

...and lens grinding in Omsk...
